Falling Statues, Rising Trump?

Image
I read a lot of history. This makes me two things: 1) Old and boring. 2) Less likely to have an emotional reaction to current events. I could spout my opinion on the statues and monuments coming down all over the country, but it's just an opinion at the end of the day. Opinions last as long as the next breath you take. The fact is, the more history you read, the more you realize that statues come down all the time. Monuments rise and fall with the societies, regimes, dynasties, etc., that put them there...and then they're gone. When Napoleon's armies arrived at the Sphinx, it was halfway buried in the sands of time, which is to say, forgotten. The Nazi's destroyed countless statues and artifacts...hell they tried to wipe every evidence of the Judeo-Christian world from existence. Some historians concur that the entire concept of western civilization barely survived the ruthless conquest of barbarians and norsemen(vikings) in the dark ages. After the sacki...

Bums and Politics

I'm tired of all the bums. They're everywhere in San Diego these days. They've become a huge problem, from a health risk stand point, to a stressor on the state and local economy. The real scary thing though is how many of them there are that we don't see. They live by the tens of thousands, and in increasing numbers, in the arroyos and canyons. They descend on the city from their encampments and I don't just mean downtown and the beaches. Every community now has a growing collection of bums on their street corners. I know this because I make the rounds in San Diego as a musician and through other employment. Trust me when I say the problem is growing.   Why is this? Granted there is no other place in the world i'd rather be a bum than San Diego, but after twenty years of residency the alarming increase in homeless populations points in a more obvious direction than just the warm climate...yes it's because of bad politics.   In case you live under a rock...

The Weekly Surf Report

Image
They say you might as well call the sport of surfing, paddling, because that's 90% of what you do out on the water...yes I do repeat that line somewhere in my book. I feel similar when it comes to getting "the first book" out there into the ocean of life. That's not to say I just drove down to Pacific Beach and hucked my beloved debut novel into the ocean. It is to say that, so far, I've done a lot of paddling and zero riding. I'm a patient patient though so it's all good; embrace journey and destination.   Unfortunately for this weekly surf report, it means no waves in sight; only paddling. By paddling I mean, dragging ass through this ocean of blogging, hashtagging, social media-lizing, etc. ad-#holyshit! Lot's of paddling. The purpose of the weekly surf report then, as I see it, is to learn to paddle better. I'm good at research, part of being good at research is recruiting help. So anyone who wants to point to where the waves are, I'm wa...
